1898. Father and son venture into an abandoned mine in search of precious metals. Inside the tunnels, a sudden landslide forces them to find a new way out into the depths of the mountain.

The Hostile Nature Cycle includes three stories of terror (The Mine, The Castaway, MCMXVIII) inspired by the limits of human knowledge with respect to the mysteries of the universe. Initially envisaged as the rediscovered tales of a fictional German author (Karl Föemhe), the trilogy features three male heroes (the father, the captain, the corporal) with tragic events set in the mountains, at sea and in war.

The trilogy includes the works:

  • The Mine
1898. Father and son venture into an abandoned mine in search of precious metals. Inside the tunnels, a sudden landslide forces them to find a new way out into the depths of the mountain.
  • The Castaway
1902. During a crossing in the open sea, the crew of a boat finds the wreckage of a fishing boat with a single survivor in a confused state.
  • MCMXVIII
1918. Having conquered an enemy outpost, a team of soldiers is ordered to defend the position until dawn. Pending reinforcements, two young comrades in arms are commissioned to expand the trenches with new excavations.

“It is a trilogy of short stories where humanity clashes with the unknown, with impossible terror, with the evil that we dare not accept. In every story, the deadly power of nature underlines the absolute nullity of man with respect to eras of our planet. It is nature, in its most hostile form, to remind humanity of its primordial domination, its biological superiority, its eternal conflicts. We are its victims. And we live within a cycle of death that we will never understand. “ — Karl Föemhe

The printed version of The Mine (A5, 17 pp), in Italian, is currently available for purchase. You can write an email to e@humenhoid.com to request your order.
